First, what is Phenylketonuria (PKU)?

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare genetic metabolic disorder in which the body lacks or has a deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), an enzyme necessary for breaking down phenylalanine (PHE). Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid commonly found in proteins. If left unmanaged, the accumulation of PHE in the body can lead to brain damage and cognitive developmental delays. PKU patients must strictly control their diet, limiting their intake of phenylalanine (also known as PA) and regularly monitoring PHE levels through blood tests to prevent long-term damage.

When designing PKUglass, I prioritized a discreet and lightweight form factor. Since children with PKU often prefer not to stand out, the glasses maintain a neutral and familiar aesthetic, blending seamlessly into everyday life. At the same time, I focused on integrating all necessary functional components within the structure itself, ensuring a streamlined design without adding bulk. This approach enhances comfort and wearability while maintaining the device’s full capabilities.
